Artya(आरत्या)

Updated: Aug 20, 2021

Artya is a CKP delicacy made in the holy month of shrawan on Fridays. On every Friday of Shrawan month deity Jeevti (protector of children) pujan is done. This puja is performed by the mother of the household for long and healthy life of her children. Artya is given as offering (वाण) to the deity and then relished by the children of the house.

Artya is a kind of sweet puris which are made with wheat and lightly flavored with bananas. It is favorite with kids and is also a nutritious snack.

Ingredients

1 mashed banana

1 cup wheat flour

1 tsp rava

1/4 cup grated jaggery

Salt to taste

Oil for frying

Method

Mash a banana and mix with grated jaggery. Let the jaggery dissolve completely with banana.

Now add rava and pinch of salt. Add wheat flour little by little. Do not add all the wheat flour at one go. It has to form a stiff dough not too soft and not very hard. In this recipe usually water is not added. The moisture from banana and jaggery should be enough to bind the dough. But if found difficult to bind then few drops of water can be added. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

Divide the dough into 2 equal balls and roll it into a big chapati, Use of rice flour can be made if it is difficult to roll. Thickness of the chapati can be made slightly thick so that the puris fluff up. Take a small size bowl to cut intosmaller puris. Here I have used a cookie cutter.

Fry these puris on low to medium heat. They get deep brown color due to the caramelisation of jaggery in oil. This recipe makes around 15-18 artya. Hot artya are ready to be served.
